article examines the evolution of cycling infrastructure in the Montréal region between 2018 and 2023, with the help of the CanBICS classification system. We first present the classification system with examples of infrastructure from the Montréal region. We then review the state of cycling infrastructure in the region in 2018 and 2023 and examine their growth over the period by sub-region and by CanBICS level. This article presents CanBICS, which can serve as a useful open-data source for practitioners and researchers alike.

This research was completed as part of the ACCEPTER le vélo project funded by FRQNT.

Introduction to the CanBICS Classification System

The Canadian Bikeway Comfort and Safety (CanBICS) Classification System is a Canada-wide dataset which classifies Canadian cycling infrastructure from OpenStreetMap (OSM) based on safety and user comfort. The dataset was developed by Winters et al. The resulting dataset includes 75 municipalities and 18,700 km of cycling infrastructure, of which 13% is high-comfort. This dataset offers official base data of infrastructure to which the CanBICS system is applied. However, as only 75 municipalities across the country and 14 in Quebec offer open data on cycling infrastructure, the data is geographically more limited. This simply represents the trade-offs between a broad reaching approach using OSM data that is not verified and a more limited approach using official data.

Overall, the CanBICS system can be an excellent tool to help understand the comfort and safety of infrastructure for users of all ages and abilities.
